Join us for Fasching and Schell’s Bock Fest on February 13 — something to look forward to amid a long, cold winter:

Fasching is an old carnival tradition that originated in the European Alps to chase away winter. Strips of cloth are strung across downtown Minnesota Street in the German peasant tradition, and the “Narren,” masked characters in colorful costumes, walk the streets inviting people to the party. Held at Turner Hall, Fasching includes music, food and dancing; costumes are encouraged.

Schell’s Bock Fest takes place outdoors on the grounds of Schell’s brewery. Enjoy an award-winning beverage beside a big bonfire and a few thousand friends. The highlight of the day is the Bock Medallion Hunt, when participants use clues to find the “bocks” (a gruff and stubborn goat of winter), to win cash and merchandise prizes.

When the innkeepers moved in, they felt taps on the shoulders and heard footsteps, even when no one else was there. A local psychic medium and paranormal investigator was able to shed light on six different spirits: Charlie is a little boy who died in his bed of scarlet fever, yet still runs through the hallways and teases the dog. Another spirit is the former caretaker, still checking on the house. The housekeeper, Claire, keeps things neat and tidy in Maggie’s Room and, and another spirit lives in the basement. A small boy resides primarily in the closet on the third floor, and has been known to hold hands with guests. All spirits love to appear when least expected.

Everyone is looking for a deal these days, and there is no shortage of them at B&Bs. A complimentary gourmet breakfast is always included. Yet, there are lesser-known and equally worthwhile benefits to a B&B stay. In fact, we’ve calculated as much as $180 in savings realized by staying at a B&B as opposed to a Luxury Hotel. Recently, BedandBreakfast.com polled innkeepers to learn about the array of amenities offered at inns and B&Bs throughout the country. Figures below reflect our survey results. Here’s how the value of B&Bs add up:

- Free breakfasts for two daily (all B&Bs): $50
- Free Wi-Fi access and/or guest computers (nearly 90% of B&Bs): $20
- Free evening refreshments available, wine/beer and appetizers for two (94% of B&Bs): $40
- Tip-free help with luggage & concierge services (restaurant reservations, etc.) (over 65% of B&Bs): $10
- Fresh flowers in rooms: $20.00

-Early morning coffee service in your room: $15.00

-In-room movies, puzzles, games-$20.00

-Complimentary water, soft drinks, popcorn-access to microwave for all guests-$10.00

Why wouldn’t you choose a Bed and Breakfast??
The meticulously restored Beyer Haus B&B has many charms, including luxurious hot tubs, a hilarious dog named Mr. MacDougal who can briefly balance a basketball on his nose while zooming around the backyard, and miniature dioramas hidden in the baseboards of every room.

We were joined at breakfast by a neighbor of the Beyer’s, Ann Makepeace, who serves on New Ulm’s Heritage Preservation Commission. Ann was one of those involved in the creation of the Historic Downtown Walking Tour Video Podcasts that I’ve heard so much about from Northfield Historical Society’s Hayes Scriven. We checked out two iPods from the Visitors Center and spent a couple hours downtown on Saturday afternoon on the podcast walking tour, including the Post Office/History Center above. We used most of the 50 dollars of Chamber Bucks that were in the gift basket for some outdoor dining at the ‘upscale Italian’ Lola’s Larkspur Market (newspaper story) restaurant. Fun coincidence: our waitress, Maggie Mae, grew up in the Beyer Haus. Maggie’s Room was her bedroom.

What might Northfield learn from New Ulm on this type of promotion, other than to make sure a blogger wins the drawing?
